Altered Thread is a textile/fiber arts Open Call at [things/found] Atelier in Portland, Oregon. There is so much beauty to be found in the threads of our everyday lives from the garments we wear, to the bags we use to carry things, to the cloth that adorns and protects the tables at which we eat. Thread is a limitless material that can challenge and reward us in art making, whether it be for practical or fine art purposes. At [things/found] Atelier, we love the concepts of reuse and transformation, using everyday fibers in new ways, using fancy fibers to make unexpected things. We want to see fiber-textiles-fabrics-threads transformed-metamorphosed-retooled-reworked-modified-changed in ways that illustrate your ideas and visions.
We are not interested in unnecessary guidelines or restrictions, so we won’t tell you what your work should look like. We find beauty in frayed ends and tattered fabric, but also in neat, tight stitches and beautiful pleats. We like bold colors and muted patterns; we like pastels and loud checks. We like art that hangs on the wall, but also mobiles and art that needs a stand. We want to see work that is woven, knotted, tatted, shaped, torn, mended, stitched, braided, finger knit. We want to see macrame and quipu, tapestries, dolls, garments, and quilts. We love all fibers and textiles and we want to see everything from your abstractions to your functional art.
To submit, please send photographs of up to five (5) pieces to angel@thingsfoundatelier.com. You may submit up to three photos per piece for a maximum of 15 photos. Please submit the $5 entry fee on our website. The link is at the bottom of the -call for entry- page. If your payment has a different name than the artist’s name, please let us know in the email with the images.
PHOTOGRAPHS: Use a clean, neutral background and show only the artwork. Be sure to shoot your photo straight on. Poor photography may negatively impact juror scores. Images must be 5MB or less and should be a PDF, JPG, or PNG file.
ARTWORK: List the information for each piece separately starting with the title, then list materials, techniques, dimensions, year completed, insurance value, retail value if the work is available for sale (otherwise list NFS). List dimensions as Height x Width x Depth in inches.
ELIGIBILITY: This call is open to all fiber/textile artists who are able to deliver/ship their work to our gallery in Portland, Oregon before the cut off of September 25th. Unfortunately, the gallery is not able to pay for any shipping at this time.
ENTRY FEE: The fee to submit is $5 for up to five entries. Entries close at 11:45pm on September 5th. The link to pay the submission fee is at the bottom of the page on the -call for entry- page on our website. https://www.thingsfoundatelier.com/altered-thread
NOTIFICATION: We will notify those with accepted work by September 11th.
DELIVERY OF ARTWORK: All accepted pieces must be delivered or shipped to the gallery prior to 7pm on September 25th. Please notify the gallery of when your piece/s will be arriving at the gallery, so that we can make sure to be here to accept your work.
